Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

When you come to our South Austin, TX dental office, we expect that you will have questions—and we hope you won’t hesitate to ask them! We are firm believers that the only silly question is one that goes unasked. Chances are, if you have a question, we’ve heard—and answered—it before. Knowledge is power, and the better your knowledge about your oral health, the better able you will be to make good decisions about treatment.

To make things easy for you, we’ve compiled a list of common questions below. If your question hasn’t been answered here, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or check with us at your next appointment.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Many of our patients who otherwise enjoy good oral health make great candidates for dental veneers. Dental veneers cover up the teeth that show when you smile, and they can hide a variety of flaws with your smile. Gaps, chips, and cracked teeth won’t show anymore with veneers. With veneers, even misaligned teeth can be covered up, saving you from months of uncomfortable orthodontics treatment. Until recently, veneers have been a well-kept Hollywood treatment, with many of your favorite celebrities’ dazzling smiles a result of this cosmetic dentistry treatment.

The best way to learn more about tooth veneers is to make an appointment with Dr. Poonam Gokhale. She can conduct a dental examination, talk to you about your smile goals, and go over your cosmetic dentistry options. If veneers are the best course of treatment, Dr. Gokhale can work with you to come up with a plan. For example, if there are any issues with your oral health to deal with first, such as tooth decay or gum disease, she can treat those so your teeth are healthy enough for veneers.

Make an appointment today to find out more about dental veneers or other cosmetic dentistry treatments that can help you achieve the smile of your dreams.

If you’ve been to any discount or department store, you know there are a multitude of teeth whitening treatments available. There are gels, mouthwashes, and toothpastes that all claim to make your teeth whiter and brighter. The truth is that although some of these products might remove surface stains from your teeth, professional teeth whitening under the care of a dental professional will give you much better results—and in a much shorter period of time.

At our South Austin, TX dental clinic, Dr. Poonam Gokhale is experienced in providing you with teeth whitening that offers safe, consistent results. You can opt for two types of whitening treatments: in-office or at-home. Both professional whitening kits will make your teeth noticeably whiter and brighter.

With our in-office teeth whitening, you can have whiter teeth over your lunch hour. Treatment takes just a bit over an hour.

If you decide you’d rather whiten your teeth conveniently at home, you’ll wear custom-made whitening trays for a period of time each day—usually 30 to 60 minutes—and within a couple of weeks, you’ll have the same dazzling results you would have after our in-office treatment.

If you want more dramatic whitening results for your teeth, or if you have an event coming up such as a wedding or reunion and you want whiter teeth, we recommend our professional teeth whitening treatment. Call today to make an appointment!

Emergency Dental Care

Unfortunately, we do not offer regular appointment hours on the weekend. If you find that you are experiencing a dental emergency over the weekend, we will get you in as soon as possible at the start of the week. You are always welcome to give us a call whenever you are experiencing a dental emergency, and we will do our best to see you as soon as possible—and on that same day whenever possible.

Some of the more common dental emergencies we see include:

  • Patients who have suffered a trauma or accident and now have a loose or knocked-out tooth
  • When the pain of a toothache has gone from mild to unbearable in a relatively short amount of time
  • Bleeding from the mouth

If a dental restoration, such as a dental crown or dental filling, has fallen out, this probably doesn’t constitute an urgent situation (unless you are in pain). Give us a call during regular office hours and we will get you in as soon as possible. Hang on to the errant restoration if possible and bring it with you to your appointment.

If you have questions about our office hours or dental emergencies, we welcome your call to our Austin, TX dental clinic.

Nobody likes pain—and dental pain in particular seems to cause a lot of anxiety with people. We can’t promise a completely pain-free experience when you are here, but we want to reassure you that we will do whatever we can to ensure your comfort while you are here.

Dr. Poonam Gokhale and her team are experienced and have a gentle touch when it comes to dealing with patients. Just speak up if you are uncomfortable during treatment, and we can take a break or figure out a way to ease your discomfort.

If you are getting treatment beyond a routine teeth cleaning, we can offer a local anesthetic to numb the area so you can relax without feeling anything. We can also offer nitrous oxide, which can help you feel relaxed during dental procedures.

If you find that anxiety over a bad experience you might have had at a childhood dental appointment, and you are putting off routine dental care, we would like to let you know that modern dental treatment has come a long way. Even in recent years, dental technology has improved the patient experience so that it is much different than it was when you were a child.

Let us know if you have questions about your upcoming dental appointment at our Austin, TX dental office. Sometimes just knowing what to expect can help alleviate fears.

We accept most dental PPOs, as well as Dentaquest and MCNA for kids under the age of 18. We also accept all major credit cards—Mastercard, Visa, Discover, and American Express—as well as third-party financing through CareCredit. You can also use your HSA card at our dental clinic.

We know the cost of dental care can be tough on family budgets, and this is why we place such an emphasis on preventive care dental appointments at our Austin, TX dental office. (If you have dental insurance, your preventive care appointments might even be covered.) Many people don’t understand the need to see the dentist when they are not experiencing pain or other dental issues, but by seeing us regularly, we can often prevent issues from arising. With routine care, we can discover and treat dental problems while they are still small. Treatment in its earliest stages is almost always less expensive—and less invasive.

For example, if we spot a tiny cavity through a routine dental x-ray, you might not even need to get a dental filling if it’s early enough. When you don’t come to the dentist to give us a chance to spot a small bit of decay, it will continue to grow. Ultimately, you might wind up with an infection in your tooth root that now needs a root canal. If you had come to your preventive appointment, chances are excellent we could have avoided the root canal altogether.

Invisalign

One of the benefits of getting Invisalign at our South Austin, TX dental clinic is that treatment times are sometimes quicker than with traditional braces. Many of our patients reach their smile goals in just 12 to 18 months of wearing the Invisalign clear plastic aligners.

If you have misaligned teeth but don’t relish many months—or even years—of metal wires and brackets, we welcome you to give us a call to learn more about Invisalign. Our patients who have had Invisalign love the benefits this modern orthodontic treatment provides.

  • The clear plastic aligners are virtually invisible, making Invisalign particularly suitable for the adult lifestyle. From board meetings to first dates, no one will even notice you are wearing the plastic aligners while they straighten your teeth.
  • Because the aligners are removable, you can eat and drink whatever you’d like. Cleaning your teeth is also easy because you can simply brush and floss the way you always have.
  • With no wires, brackets, or other metal in your mouth, you don’t have to worry about injuries to the soft tissues of your mouth. Invisalign’s clear aligners are smooth plastic.

It’s never too late to have straight teeth. Give us a call today to find out more about Invisalign in South Austin, TX.
