In dentistry, the priority is always preserving a patient’s natural teeth. Unfortunately, disease, decay, infection, overcrowding, or traumatic impact sometimes make this impossible. In these situations, the damaged tooth must be extracted.

A tooth extraction is a surgical procedure in which a damaged tooth is removed from its “socket” in a patient’s jawbone. This prospect is daunting to many. However, understanding why tooth extraction is necessary and the particulars of the procedure is crucial to relieving any anxiety or unease.

Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is required when a tooth becomes damaged to such an extent that it cannot be saved via root canal therapy.  Other common reasons for extraction include decay that weakens a tooth's supporting structures and tissues. Tooth extraction may also be required to create the necessary space in the mouth for orthodontic treatments.

The most commonly extracted are impacted third molars, or wisdom teeth, that emerge improperly and pose risks of infection, overcrowding, and shifting among other teeth.

How Does Tooth Extraction Work?

Tooth extraction is performed in-office by a dentist or oral surgeon. Here’s a breakdown of the process involved:

  • A local anesthetic is professionally administered to the area around the tooth. This numbs the tissues surrounding the tooth and ensures the patient's comfort.
  • The dentist or surgeon begins gently and gradually loosening the tooth in its socket in the jawbone.
  • Once the tooth is loosened, it is removed from its socket using specialized tools.
  • After extraction, the hole where the tooth used to be is stitched up to prevent infection, and a gauze pad is applied to control bleeding.
  • After the procedure, the patient receives detailed post-op instructions to prevent aggravation or infection and promote quick healing.

Understanding the tooth extraction procedure and the circumstances that warrant it empowers you to approach situations in which it’s required calmly and prepared to make an informed decision and take the necessary steps to ensure optimal results.
